Content - Key areas:
We will introduce the IPR system and the history behind it. We will look into the various forms of intellectual property. We will discuss when and how to apply the various types of IPR and the pros and cons of IPR. We will get an understanding of the timeline of a patent process.

The student will be introduced to the relevant public available databases and, through cases, become acquainted with working with the databases. The student will be trained in using publicity available information to assess the possible routes of protection of a given case.


Learning outcomes:
The objective of the IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) course is to make the student familiar with the various types of IPR and how to use them. Learning objectives are:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the IPR system and the history behind it.

Skills:

  • Understand the various types of IPR, including copyrights, trademarks, design protection, utility models and patents
  • Use trademarks, design protection and patents on a given example
  • The student will apply the theoretical framework on a number of cases to train the use of intellectual property rights as a tool in product development.
  • Through students own work on a number of major assignments to gain an in depth understanding of the IPR system and get hands on experience with using the public available tools for IPR analysis

Competencies:

  • Evaluate which types of IPR are most relevant to apply under given circumstances

August one week and a number of lessons/meetings during the autumn

Form of instruction:
The course is based on different forms of teaching:

1) Lectures by the responsible teacher

2) Students exploring and presenting various subjects to the class, either as presentations or as development of an IPR wiki

3) Apply the various types of IPR on a number of cases

Evaluation
Internal examination assessed by the teacher as pass/fail. The assessment is based on:
  • Participation in at least 80 % of the lessons
  • Submission of mandatory assignments planned at the beginning of the course
  • Multiple choice test


Comments:
The theoretical part of the course will be held in week 33, followed by a number of assignments to be handed in during the autumn semester.
