Prerequisites:
The students are expected to have a general knowledge of theories about organizational structures and organizational behavior as well as knowledge of methods for operation management. The students further are expected to be able to identity and describe a business-related problem and to make presentations in front of a group and to carry out peer-to-peer evaluation of presentations.

Purpose:
This course aims at giving the student a foundation for acting as project manager by going beyond project planning and into issues related to management of people and the organizational context in which the project is situated. The course therefore aims at developing the students’ knowledge of concepts, theories and methods of project management. The course thus gives the student knowledge about project planning, project organization, controlling and follow-up as well as leadership issues related to project management. The course also aims at giving the students skills in applying the concepts, theories and methods to real-world situations and in presenting the project for an audience in a structured manner.

Goals description (SOLO taxonomy):
The student must be able to demonstrate knowledge of concepts, theories, and methods; and skills in using them on such a level that he/she is able to, for a non-familiar case

  • Analyze project conditions and produce a clear and well-structured project proposal for a fictive decision maker by correctly applying relevant methods, models, and theories to the case. The project proposal must contain relevant elements as indicated in “Key areas”.
  • Present the project proposal for a fictive decision maker by a power-point supported oral presentation and reflect on the theory and methods applied.

Scheduled classes:
36 hours during 12 weeks (3x12) + 1 hour of consultation on the semester template = 37 hours.

Form of instruction:
The students are expected to read the literature prior to classes. Classes will be based on the “Underlying Principle of Education” at SDU. On class students will work individual and in teams on solving different tasks. During the semester the students will develop their own template for managing projects. This project template is developed as a learning portfolio during the semester and will serve as the basis for solving the exam case. During discussions and presentations with peer-to-peer evaluation and supervision students will develop their skills and competences for managing projects.

Time of examination:
Ordinary exam in June.
Re-examination in August.

Registration for the course is automatically a registration for the ordinary examination in the course.
Cancellation is not possible.
If the student does not participate in the examination, the student will use an examination attempt.
The university may grant an exemption from the rules in case of exceptional circumstances.

Examination form at the re-exam can be changed.

Take-home and oral exam.

Supplemental information for the form of examination:
48 hour take-home assignment followed by an oral individual presentation and examination (15 minutes). Handing in the take-home assignment is a pre-requisite for participating in the oral presentation.  

Duration: Minimum 48 hours for the take home. Oral exam 15 minutes per student.
Location: Home assignment no restrictions. Oral exam at SDU.

The exam assignment consists of a non-familiar case for which the student has to produce a project proposal for a fictive decision maker. The proposal must be delivered as a power-point presentation.
Additional written material may be submitted together with the power-point slides. It will be seen as background material for the assessment – and is of minor importance compared to the power-point slides and the oral presentation.

The student’s performance at the exam will be assessed based on his/her ability to (1) apply relevant methods, models, and theories to the case and team performance, (2) answer the questions posed in the oral examination, and (3) make a professional power-point based oral presentation.

The grade 12 is given when the student has demonstrated insight into and knowledge of the module's purpose and complete fulfillment of the specific goals with few or minor shortcomings.
