Prerequisites:
Knowledge of European economic and/or political integration.

Purpose:
The course aims at deepening the students' knowledge of current and future developments in the field of regional economic integration and the European Union.

Content - Key areas:
The first part is a general introduction to regional economic integration based on theories of economic and political integration and a brief history of European Integration as well as regional co-operation in other parts of the world. The second part is dedicated to a survey of recent trends in Regional Integration and the most important policy-areas, as are:
  • The Economic and Monetary Union
  • The implementation of the Single European Market
  • Institutional reforms
  • Regional Policy
  • International trade
  • Common Commercial Policy
  • NAFTA
  • International trade regimes etc.
Additionally, a work-group session will be included, where students are requested to present a short key-note paper within the field of Economic Integration and Regional Co-operation.

Goals description (SOLO taxonomy):
The course will enable the students to analyse a specific topic in the field of economic integration from a theoretical as well as empirical perspective, and to present the results in a short key-note and in an oral presentation. More specific student must be able to:
  • Structure the chosen subject and to write a key-note paper.
  • Provide an multi-structural and comprehensive presentation of the topic.
  • Analyze the issue and compare and relate to empirical examples.
  • Provide an assessment of results and findings and the path of analysis followed.

Time of classes:
Spring.
Form of instruction:
2 hours weekly in 15 weeks, a total of 30 contact hours.
Lectures and student presentation in English. Combination of lectures, student presentations and discussions .To improve the process of activated learning all students has to present a problem based outline of their Key note paper in class (15-20 min). Furthermore the students must deliver an oral presentations in class and prepare a short hand out on the selected topic (1-2 pages) .

Time of examination:
Ordinary examination in June. Reexamination in August.

Registration for the course is automatically a registration for the ordinary examination of the course. Cancellation is not possible. If the student does not participate in the examination, the student will use an examination attempt.
The university may grant an exemption from the rules in case of exceptional circumstances.

Please note that the type and form of the re-examination may differ from that of the ordinary examination.

Examination conditions:
Oral presentation (9069012) of outline for term paper including a short hand out, see "Form of Instruction".

Fulfillment of the examination condition is only possible prior to the ordinary examination.
Participation in the re-exam thus requires that the examination condition is met prior to the ordinary examination.

Form of examination for the certificate:
Written term paper.

Supplemental information for the form of examination:
Paper written individually or in groups of max 2 students. Individually graded - each student's individual contribution to the report must be identifiable. Electronic hand-in via SDU-Assignment in Blackboard.  Length of paper: 1 student: max 12 pages, 2 students: max 20 pages.

Comments:
The number of students enrolled may be restricted by the Study Board.  If the enrolment limit is exceeded preference is granted to full degree students following a compulsory course on a SDU programme. Within the limit, full degree students having selected the course as an elective, guest and exchange students are offered enrolment on a first come first served basis.
Exchange students, if any: Internal grading. Assessment as for ordinary students.
