Prerequisites:
Basic knowledge within mechanics of materials and good English language skills are necessary.


Content - Key areas:
This course is designed to make an introduction to composite materials, and to the manufacturing methods used to produce them.

Key areas:
  • Fibers, including carbon fiber, fiberglass, and aramid (Kevlar)
  • Fiber configurations such as unidirectional and woven fabrics
  • Matrix, including thermoplastic and thermoset types
  • Mechanical behavior
  • Design and tooling considerations
  • Manufacturing methods, including hand lay-up, prepreg layup, vacuum infusion, pultrusion, and filament winding
  • Curing methods such as room temperature, oven, and autoclave cures
  • Quality and defects

Learning outcomes:
Knowledge

  • Describe the constituent components of a composite material
  • Understand the benefits and limitations of composite materials
  • See the relationship between product design, material choice, and manufacturing method

Skills

  • Calculate fiber volume fraction and other critical composite properties
  • Apply the rule of mixtures to predict the mechanical properties of a composite material

Competences

  • Identify the optimal design, composite material, and manufacturing method for a given application

Form of instruction:
The course is a combination of theory lectures, demonstrations, exercises, and visits to companies producing product from composite materials.


Evaluation
The students create a portfolio, consisting of exercises and assignments given throughout the semester.  
Based on the individual portfolio the evaluation will result in a grade of pass/fail. Internal examiner.
